Title : Complete Snowboarder
Author : Jeff Bennett
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Great Learn-How-to-Board Book!

Great introduction to snowboarding. Provides all the language and techniques, from beginner to expert. It works best to reread it again after a few times out as you will pick up on many of the tips and techniques once you learn how the basic moves feel. I kept my copy in the car and reread some sections over lunch on my first day. Especially important to read the section on getting off of the chair lift. This has saved me from many falls, while I have watched others flounder and get injured for not following the advice. Still need to take a lesson first time out, but it will all make sense alot sooner.

Title : Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt: Guide for Skiers and Mountain Walkers
Author : Peter Cliff
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : You could not do The Haute Route without this book!

The Haute Route by Peter Cliff provides an extremely accurate description of an Alpine expedition. The Classic Route included diagrams, photos, and narratives and offered sufficient information for us, as an unguided group of five, to navigate our way successfully from Chamonix to Zermatt in the anticipated eight days (July 17-July 24, 2001). Poor weather hampered our start, but with the use of the spot-heights provided in the guide, a map and compass, and limited visibility, we were able to proceed. The sections of the route which Peter Cliff described as challenging proved to be so. Long sections were indeed very long. The scenery was equally as breath-taking as he described. His time estimates were very close that of our group (give or take a little), depending upon snow and weather conditions. The Classic Route is essentially a long walk requiring sustained effort, both mental as well as physical, and Peter Cliff's guide proved to be a reliable and thorough source of information to assist in route-finding and where variations/alternatives may be found if required. We carried the guide through the Alps and referred to it frequently. This guide can be highly recommended for anyone seriously interested in negotiating their way through the highest mountains of the Alps. As far as personal recommendations to readers of this book are concerned, there are only a few: (1) it is not necessary to purchase all the maps listed in the guide - select either the 1:25,000 or the 1:50,000, not both. (2) purchase a reliable altimeter - use it for frequent spot-height checks. (3) do not expect to see lots of other walkers on The Haute Route - route-finding is a challenge and a guide such as this is invaluable. (4) add a pair of ear-plugs to your equipment list - you will need them at the more popular/noisy huts. (5) the La Breya chairlift is spectacularly high and an extremely enjoyable part of the journey - during the period we were there, it ran constantly and was moderately priced at 9 Swiss Francs. Finally, we heard it rumoured that Peter Cliff was at the Albert Premier Hut on July 17, and that we had just missed him. It would have been a pleasure to meet him in person and thank him for writing such an entertaining, enjoyable and informative book.

Title : Where to Ski Snowboard 2007 (The 1000 Best Winter Sports Resorts in the World)
Author : Chris Gill
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A 'Bible' for any Skier or Boarder

This is a publication that no Skier or Boarder, whatever their grade, should be without.
The book gives a true, accurate and honest picture of all the major ski countries and their resorts.
It is quick to praise a resorts good points, but does not 'hide' the bad ones either.
Covering everything from Snow reliability, Piste Quality and Extent, Mountain Restaurants, Ski Schools, Accommodation in the resort, Nightlife etc, etc.
It is very good value for money and is easy to use and read.
It can save pounds and lots of 'heartbreaks' and 'spoilt' holidays.

Title : Cross-country Skiing for Everyone
Author : Jules Older
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : What a kick!

One of the things I love about cross-country skiing is its diversity. Another thing is the easy-going quality -- you just go and enjoy the hell out of it, whether you're skating or track skiing or telemarking or running around the backcountry yodeling. The thing I DON'T like is how many practitioners take it sooo seriously. Jules Older's book is a kick in the pants. He has the right priorities. Whether he's talking about equipment, clothing, technique, skiing with your old dog, even waxing (which attracts the real fanatics!), you feel he's about to giggle. and it's contagious! There's still plenty of useful information; but the context - including photos - makes it fun. If you'd like to learn about a great sport, hear some great stories, and laugh a lot in the process, I'd choose this over any other book! (And yeah, I used to be one of those fanatics; turns out it's more fun to learn and laugh at the same time.)

Title : Caught Inside: a Surfer's Year on the California Coast
Author : Daniel Duane
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Great mix of wildlife, wild Calfornia and surf philosophy

I am a non-surfer but was totally absorbed by Duane's writing. In contrast to much sports writing, the great achievements are a subtext - it sounds cliché, but what underpins the book is Duane's choice to make a total change of lifestyle to achieve a dream and live more truly. Duane writes with a sensitive awareness of self and the environment that surrounds him. Sufficiently mature to be aware of when in a moment of anger he had become that which he hated and apologise for it, balanced by enough childlike humour to describe an otter 'backstroking' past him. His observation of the Californian coast is eagle eyed, from the mustard flowers and worn Cyprus trees to the seals, otters, birds and big cats that inhabit the world he shares. And then there's the surfing...! All in all a great book, if you liked El Capitan you will find this similar but much more fluid.

Title : Inner Skiing
Author : Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An effective and inspiring guide to freeing skiers from fear

I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. I reread Inner Skiing annually as an essential pre-ski exercise, and if I don't read every word I never fail to take a dose of inspiration from the paragraph in the last chapter which begins "Inside us all is a mountain with no top and no bottom. The skiing there is perfect. The snow is made of pure peace and there is not a trace of Self 1 interference.................Skiing this inner mountain has the power to satisfy the human longing to know oneself and the reason for which one was born." You may guess from this that Timothy Gallwey's is the inner game of life, with applications far beyond the realms of sport, as his other writing attests. Dr. Basil Lee, London, England.

Title : Scooby Doo and the Snow Monster (Scooby-Doo! Mysteries (Paperback))
Author : James Gelsey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Excellent Movie!

I love this Scooby Doo movie! It's one of the best that I have ever seen. I love it because it's in a setting of snow and I love how Scooby and the gang solve the mystery! I definetly recommend!

Title : The All-mountain Skier: The Way to Expert Skiing
Author : Mark Elling
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : The best ski book. For anyone except total beginners.

Some people will never be able to get any benefit from reading a book on a sport. Not everyone can take the knowledge of _how_ something should be done and the advice on how it should look/feel, and be thinking about it when they are trying to perform the action later. For them, all such books are wasted efforts.

Luckily for me I get real benefits from these sorts of books if they are done well. Especially in sports that are technical and often counter-intuitive, which skiing certain is.

This book is superb example of a sports manual and it does all that one could hope for in a book.

For me the most useful aspects of the book are:
- the author explaining to you in detail what is happening when you ski, how it works, what your body does and what the skis do
- how it should _feel_ to do something right. This allows you to have a goal to work towards and goes some way to addressing the disadvantages of not having an instructor.
- the drills

The overall structure of the book is also a strong point. The author breaks down 'skiing' into stance, steering, edging, body movement etc and goes into great detail on each. This helps you to target areas more specifically and find where lies the weakness that seems to be holding you back.

There is also a great section on choosing your equipment, and perhaps more importantly, having it set up correctly.

Later on in the book the chapters move away from this 'toolbox' approach and onto how a skier should use their tools ski in a certain manner and to deal with different terrain and conditions (steeps, crud, trees, bumps).

This sections of the book feels like getting the best advice your instructor/friends ever gave you. Certainly you then have to get out there and do it in order to learn, but at least you know what you should be doing, how it should feel, what your problems may be etc.

I have already gone on long enough, but in closing I would remind anyone reading how much even 1 hour of tuition costs. Even if you don't get as much out of this book as I did it is a bargain, and the _only_ book I would recommend.

I would defy anyone to read it and not feel that they have learned something which they can use to improve their skiing.

Title : Where to Ski Snowboard 2007 (The 1000 Best Winter Sports Resorts in the World)
Author : Chris Gill
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Great factual guide to resorts

I can't live without this book any more when going snowboarding. It's also fun browsing through it when you're deciding where to go.

Excellent piste maps, resort descriptions, and ratings of all sorts of things. The town plans are terrible and it's a shame there aren't more photos, but there's too much information to fit in big photos.

Title : Skiing (Crowood Sports Guides)
Author : Fred Foxon
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A very good look at the basic's of skiing

Fred Foxon's book covers the basic's of skiing from the first day through to skiing bumps and powder. Skiing has changed drastically in the last few years but,the basics are still the same. Even though this book was written in 1991 it still has much to offer the reader. Excellent photos help make it a clear and an easy to understand teaching aid.

Title : Where to Ski Snowboard 2007 (The 1000 Best Winter Sports Resorts in the World)
Author : Chris Gill
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Don't book your ski holiday without looking at this book!

Really useful guide ~ it gives lots of information on all aspects of the resort and slopes; both good and bad, in a very logical and well laid out format. I have used it for my last 3 ski holidays and have found the info spot on. It also includes comments that other readers have sent in which adds to the breadth of information.

Title : Athletic Skier
Author : Warren Witherall
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Cut your FIS points in half!

The idea of canting at the base of the boot and not the boot itself is pure genious!

Title : Surfing: A Beginner's Manual
Author : Wayne Alderson
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A practical and clear introduction to the sport.

Wayne Alderson's book covers all the important issues necessary to give anyone who wants to start surfing a fun, safe and informed introduction to this sport. The book takes the beginner through the fundamentals in good detail with clear photographs and illustrations. Since the author is British it is geared to surfers in the UK. However it has a very sensible approach to learning the fundamentals of surfing that anyone can benefit from. It also covers all the ancillary issues such as equipment selection, safety and surfing weather in practical detail. Above all it is easy and fun to read. With more advanced techniques also included it provides support even to intermediate or advanced surfers wanting another angle on surfing at their level. I have surfed in the UK, in Japan, Indonesia and Australia and I find myself using this book as a reference time and again to help refresh and move my surfing to the next level. Read, surf and enjoy.
