This is a publication that no Skier or Boarder,whatever their grade, should be without.
The book gives a true, accurate and honest picture of all the major ski countries and their resorts.
It is quick to praise a resorts good points, but does not 'hide' the bad ones either.
Covering everything from Snow reliability, Piste Quality and Extent, Mountain Restaurants, Ski Schools, Accommodation in the resort, Nightlife etc, etc.
It is very good value for money and is easy to use and read.
It can save pounds and lots of 'heartbreaks' and 'spoilt' holidays.

This is a great book to learn in depth about surfing, I have been surfing since I was 6 and I wish that I had a book to teach me all of the things that I learned the hard way. This book is a survival guide, It teaches you about waves, form and how to identify rip tides and other things that can end your day of surfing and your life. If you are considering learning to to surf, you can't afford not to read this book.

I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. This book i thought was going to be full of incoherent mumblings about fathoms and linear models but instead of a physics lessons i got very in depth, easy to comprehend information about waves. this helped me, as a surfer, understand the waves and which in turn brought my surfing to a whole new level. I fully recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in the sea, whether you are a surfer of just a gazing out to sea kind of person!

Title : The All-mountain Skier: The Way to Expert Skiing

Summary : High Praise

The All Mountain Skier by Mark Elling is the best manual I have read. It tackles the problems faces by the second year skier wishing to become advanced. I have been taking lessons and was told to do allsorts of movements that I did not understand. This book puts those movements into perspective. On smooth piste at low speed they were unnecessary, at speed on rough and powder they become fundamental.

I practice on a dry slope. Whilst reading the book I became an advanced skier overnight. All the things had been taught in training now made sense. Because I now understood why, I was able to identify the different elements and embody them in my technique.

There is an effective section on equipment.

I owe a lot to Mr Elling. He has saved me a fortune in tuition. This book is not for the raw beginner but as soon as you know that you want to ski beyond the intermediate level buy the book and grow into it. Thanks Mr Elling, I hope this sells some more for you.

Summary : Good book for newbies

Covers all you need to know about the basics of snowboarding. From history too basic technique and on to advanced technique. The basics are great in this book and are written in a good clear style. However the advanced techniques could do with some more explanation. Also some more colourful pics would have been nice, but the illustrations are clear and useful. If you have not been before I would defiantly recommend reading this book before hand.

Title : Pipe Dreams: A Surfer's Journey

Summary : Interesting but average...

This should have been a fascinating read, after all, Kelly Slater has dominated the surfing scene like no one else before and is still considered by many as one of the most powerful surfers around today. However, what we actually get is none of the passion of Kelly's surfing and weak writing lets down what could have been a fascinating story. It all too often has the feel of a school project and even the climax of a world championship fought out in the finals of the Pipemasters contest in Hawaii fails to conjure up the tension it should.

All surfers should find this an interesting enough read, but Kelly should have employed the services of a biographer to tell his story. Not in the same league as Tony Hawk's autobiography.

Summary : Nice on the book shelf but not a bible

Nicely presented with statistics and the such like , but a 'world summary' more than a world guide.Any core surfer is going to know about most of the places presented anyway. Also some strange choices - Israel ??! and Pernambuco ?? I lived in Brazil for six years and can definetly state that Pernambuco has the WORST surf in Brazil.Keeps you busy in the down time and the photos and oceanography info are excellent .

Following Duane from the fringes to the heart of (Californian) surf-culture feels like a personal experience. He writes poetically but avoids cliche by being self-effacing and objective. 'CI' combines diverse literary sources with the simple but physical sensations of surfing; but these are kept in perspective by Duane's reverence for the nature that envelops him. Beautiful.
