Title : Surfing: A Beginner's Manual Author : Wayne Alderson Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Brilliant basic beginners book
I got this book a week before my first ever surfing lesson, and it made me feel so much more confident going in the water, answering some of my questions and giving tips just on things like carrying your board, and paddling out, which all seem quite simple, but to a beginner can be a bit overwhelming all put together. It was great to come back to as well, to review what I'd done, and provides some good information on the different types of boards. It also contains some basic information about rips, currents, what forms waves, and what causes them to break, which I also found fascinating. It is very basic, but as a beginner that's all you need, and I'd definitely recommend it to ayone starting out.
Title : Surfing Europe (Footprint Surfing Guide) Author : Chris Nelson Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : awesome
I've just bought this book and I have to say it's the best surf guide out there. Its got more spots than my Stormrider but it also has info on places to stay, surf shops, tips from top surfers, stuff to actually read - I don't know why no one's done this before. I'm off to France next week and this will definately be on my dashboard. Nice one.
Title : Where to Ski Snowboard 2007 (The 1000 Best Winter Sports Resorts in the World) Author : Chris Gill Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : A 'Bible' for any Skier or Boarder
This is a publication that no Skier or Boarder, whatever their grade, should be without. The book gives a true, accurate and honest picture of all the major ski countries and their resorts. It is quick to praise a resorts good points, but does not 'hide' the bad ones either. Covering everything from Snow reliability, Piste Quality and Extent, Mountain Restaurants, Ski Schools, Accommodation in the resort, Nightlife etc, etc. It is very good value for money and is easy to use and read. It can save pounds and lots of 'heartbreaks' and 'spoilt' holidays.
Title : Surf Science: An Introduction to Waves for Surfing Author : Tony Butt Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Whoa!
This book i thought was going to be full of incoherent mumblings about fathoms and linear models but instead of a physics lessons i got very in depth, easy to comprehend information about waves. this helped me, as a surfer, understand the waves and which in turn brought my surfing to a whole new level. I fully recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in the sea, whether you are a surfer of just a gazing out to sea kind of person!
Title : Learn to Surf Author : James MacLaren Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : A must for a beginning surfer, more of a survival guide.
This is a great book to learn in depth about surfing, I have been surfing since I was 6 and I wish that I had a book to teach me all of the things that I learned the hard way. This book is a survival guide, It teaches you about waves, form and how to identify rip tides and other things that can end your day of surfing and your life. If you are considering learning to to surf, you can't afford not to read this book.
Title : Complete Snowboarder Author : Jeff Bennett Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Good book for newbies
Covers all you need to know about the basics of snowboarding. From history too basic technique and on to advanced technique. The basics are great in this book and are written in a good clear style. However the advanced techniques could do with some more explanation. Also some more colourful pics would have been nice, but the illustrations are clear and useful. If you have not been before I would defiantly recommend reading this book before hand.
Title : Cross-country Skiing for Everyone Author : Jules Older Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : What a kick!
One of the things I love about cross-country skiing is its diversity. Another thing is the easy-going quality -- you just go and enjoy the hell out of it, whether you're skating or track skiing or telemarking or running around the backcountry yodeling. The thing I DON'T like is how many practitioners take it sooo seriously. Jules Older's book is a kick in the pants. He has the right priorities. Whether he's talking about equipment, clothing, technique, skiing with your old dog, even waxing (which attracts the real fanatics!), you feel he's about to giggle. and it's contagious! There's still plenty of useful information; but the context - including photos - makes it fun. If you'd like to learn about a great sport, hear some great stories, and laugh a lot in the process, I'd choose this over any other book! (And yeah, I used to be one of those fanatics; turns out it's more fun to learn and laugh at the same time.)
Title : Inner Skiing Author : Gallwey Rating : 2 Stars out of 5. Summary : Another thing to get wrong
This book will add a new dimension to your skiing mistakes. Not only can you ski with your feet too close together, hands in the wrong place, bad posture and all those other things ski books go on about, but you can also think in the wrong way. Excellent. Another thing to think about.
Title : Where to Ski Snowboard 2007 (The 1000 Best Winter Sports Resorts in the World) Author : Chris Gill Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Don't know where to go? - essential reading
Having not been skiing for a number of years I wanted to get the latest up-to-date information to ensure I picked the most suitable resort for our needs.
This book is so easy to use. It has a section for each individual resort that tells you, honestly, the plus and minus points, the details that holiday brochures won't mention and things to look out for - often based on reports that readers send in on the resorts they have visited.
There is a quick-view table giving star ratings for various features such as 'queues', 'snow', 'extent'so you can easily compare the scores for different resorts
You can write down a 'wishlist' for your ideal resort and use the 'resort shortlists' to help you spot resorts that will suit you.
This book will come out every year from now on before I even lift a holiday brochure!
Title : The World Stormrider Guide (Stormrider Guides) Author : Antony Colas Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : The planning starts here...
No way near as in depth as the European Stormrider, but it's crammed with loads of beautiful photos and serves as a good jump off point to start your surfari from...
Title : Surfing: A Beginner's Manual Author : Wayne Alderson Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : A practical and clear introduction to the sport.
Wayne Alderson's book covers all the important issues necessary to give anyone who wants to start surfing a fun, safe and informed introduction to this sport. The book takes the beginner through the fundamentals in good detail with clear photographs and illustrations. Since the author is British it is geared to surfers in the UK. However it has a very sensible approach to learning the fundamentals of surfing that anyone can benefit from. It also covers all the ancillary issues such as equipment selection, safety and surfing weather in practical detail. Above all it is easy and fun to read. With more advanced techniques also included it provides support even to intermediate or advanced surfers wanting another angle on surfing at their level. I have surfed in the UK, in Japan, Indonesia and Australia and I find myself using this book as a reference time and again to help refresh and move my surfing to the next level. Read, surf and enjoy.
Title : Snowboarding Skills: The Back to Basics Essentials for All Levels Author : Cindy Kleh Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Lots of useful tips.
A well laid out book which covers the basics but also offers tips on technique and common riding problems for more experienced snowboarders. Better than a lot of the other books on offer
Title : Allen and Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips (Falcon Guide) Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Along side Parker's book telemark heaven is just a turn away
Relevent tips and humourous illustrations make this one of the most approachable books, in not just telemark, but all spheres of skiing. All you now need are snowy mountains.
Title : Caught Inside: a Surfer's Year on the California Coast Author : Daniel Duane Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Great mix of wildlife, wild Calfornia and surf philosophy
Title : Pipe Dreams: A Surfer's Journey Author : Kelly Slater Rating : 3 Stars out of 5. Summary : Interesting but average...
This should have been a fascinating read, after all, Kelly Slater has dominated the surfing scene like no one else before and is still considered by many as one of the most powerful surfers around today. However, what we actually get is none of the passion of Kelly's surfing and weak writing lets down what could have been a fascinating story. It all too often has the feel of a school project and even the climax of a world championship fought out in the finals of the Pipemasters contest in Hawaii fails to conjure up the tension it should.
All surfers should find this an interesting enough read, but Kelly should have employed the services of a biographer to tell his story. Not in the same league as Tony Hawk's autobiography.
