Title : The Stormrider Guide: Europe - Complete Colour Atlas and Guide to All the Surfing Locations in Europe
Author : Oliver Fitzjones
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Indispensable
You must buy this book if you're planning on going further afield than your regular break. I spent 8 months in France and found some great spots on the back of this book. And when you're stuck at home, you'll find yourself drooling over the pictures and mentally planning your way around europe!

Title : Caught Inside: a Surfer's Year on the California Coast
Author : Daniel Duane
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A fantastic book
This book is well worth owning. It is amusing, self-depreciating, and extremely well written avoiding most of the cliches and painting a beautiful picture of the Californian coast. The best surf autobiography I have read since "Walking on water" by Andy Martin

Title : That Oceanic Feeling: A Surfer's View of the World
Author : Fiona Capp
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Antidote to the British Winter....
If you're looking for motivation to dig out, wax up and paddle out your surf board after a long cold winter, this is it.
Beautifully written, this thoughful and though provoking book captures the pleasures of surfing, and covers just enough of the history and culture of the sport to whet your appetitie without trying to turn you into a social historian.
The Austrialian author is obviously bent out of shape by Austalia's domestic immigration policy, but even her political hand-wringing is thought provoking, even though it loses a lot of its relevance for UK readers.
I've just read my copy in two days and would happily recommend it to any surfer (or anyone with a love of the sea) looking for a good read....

Title : Complete Snowboarder
Author : Jeff Bennett
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Great Learn-How-to-Board Book!
Great introduction to snowboarding. Provides all the language and techniques, from beginner to expert. It works best to reread it again after a few times out as you will pick up on many of the tips and techniques once you learn how the basic moves feel. I kept my copy in the car and reread some sections over lunch on my first day. Especially important to read the section on getting off of the chair lift. This has saved me from many falls, while I have watched others flounder and get injured for not following the advice.
Still need to take a lesson first time out, but it will all make sense alot sooner.

Title : Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt: Guide for Skiers and Mountain Walkers
Author : Peter Cliff
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : The Haute-Route on skis...
Based on the route-descriptions, the previous reviewer appears to refer only to the summer walker's section of this book (you certainly won't be taking the avalanche-prone summer route from the La Breya lift in the course of a ski-mountaineering Haute-Route).
However, the positive assessment extends to the ski section, as well. This is a wonderful guide to one of the great alpine ski tours, including details critical to route-finding over complex, glaciated terrain in possibly poor visibility.
Recognizing that choice of ski-mountaineering routes is extremely conditions skills dependent, the book includes information on the true classic route--including the brilliant but technical Plateau du Couloir the tiresome, plodding Otemma glacier--as well as several typical /or desirable variations like Verbier Grand Lui.
Cliff's guide contains some route photos stylized maps that are useful for generalized visualization of route segments. I would have preferred that he include a map of the complete route, but it isn't really necessary because you absolutely will need to purchase at least some of the recommended topo maps (pick the 1:50,000 ski topos; they include major ski route lines are frequently updated by the efficient Swiss government. The smaller-scale 1:25,000 maps are beautiful, but do not show routes; also, you would have to purchase so many of them that they are not practical).
The author includes interesting asides about the history of the route adjacent areas. The accomplishments of early Haute Route ski-pioneers are truly astounding, given the rudimentary nature of their gear clothing.
The book's information regarding hut contacts is somewhat limited (although newer editions may address this); many of the huts recently acquired web sites e-mail addresses that greatly simplify reservations for language-challenged Americans. On this point, Cliff--with classic British reserve--perhaps under-emphasizes the utility of rudimentary French /or German skills in accomplishing the Haute Route; it is difficult to take advantage of the hut-keeper's local knowledge with only English in your quiver.
He also doesn't address telemark equipment in much depth. For better or worse, to Americans ski touring usually means telemarking, so talk to a knowledgeable guide before showing up on pins. You need to make some adjustments, most notably: jury-rigging a pair of harscheisen.
The book does not include any coverage beyond the Haute Route, so if you intend to do day tours in Chamonix to warm up or in Zermatt before continuing on to Saas Fee, then look elsewhere: "Mont Blanc Ski Tours" is excellent.
"High level route, Chamonix, Zermatt, Saas: Ski mountaineering in the Mont Blanc range and Pennine Alps" by Eric Roberts is another good guide to the Haute Route if you can find it.

Title : Allen and Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips (Falcon Guide)
Author : Allen O'Bannon
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Drop the knee, not the bomb...
I'm the illustrator of this groovy book. If the following sounds like shameless self promotion...it is. 109 amazing tele-tips, what more could you ask for? I personally subjected my ski partners to my less than subtal research technique, I bugged 'em by asking every concievable question and making 'em try (almost) every tip in the book. The winter of 97/98 involved getting up in the morning and going backcountry skiing, then coming home and drawing bizzare cartoons of what subtal telemark insights I uncovered durring the day. The results are in this little book. People actually stop me on the street and thank me for improving their tele-skiing! If you telemark (beginner or expert, doesn't matter) you need this book; for example there is a funny cartoon of a guy puting a penny in his butt...really! Strange but true, this is a valuable tool to perfect this beautiful style of skiing. 'nuff said...Mike Clelland!

Title : Surfing: A Beginner's Manual
Author : Wayne Alderson
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : No book can compare to lessons
This is a very good book but by reading anything like this without taking lessons it could be dextremental for your surfing.
First note this book is for beginners only and is very good at what it does, this is the book to buy, it takes you through safety, equipment, types of surf, very basic surf forcasting, and then to the important bits, standing up and learning to ride a wave properly like the pro's. I would strongly recommend to buy this book above all others.
It does roughly go over more complex moves but you won't be doing these for a long time yet and will need specialized lessons probably.
Lastly I have to reiterate, to do anything like this its no good just reading a book, you NEED real lessons, someone to show you how to overcome boundries, tell you if your learning a technique wrong... which can take a longtime and much more effort to relearn if you do learn it wrong, and also to answer your questions, but most importantly boost your confidence in the water.

Title : Inner Skiing
Author : Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A small number of classic text that can guide skiing
Many great professionals strive to spread the exilleration and potential that exists in the mountains. It is no enditment on the majority that there are so few truly great books, but here we have one. I have been lucky enough to have a coach who has had the appraoch detailed in Inner Skiing for a number of years, although without any labels. Reading Inner Skiing I was pleased to discover the background to my coaching to date. So simple is the premise of Inner Skiing that if the reader is able to let their mind free their performance can develop to their own personnal highs. To attempt to explain Inner Skiing is meaningless. Just read, take note and try it out. Having seen similar techniques in practice, in Europe, I can vouch for the look of joy on a friends face and the quatum increase in their performance. A must for all skiers from beginners to instructors, just as long as you are not expecting a technical manual. Your mind has a greater effect on your performance.

Title : The Stormrider Guide: Europe - Complete Colour Atlas and Guide to All the Surfing Locations in Europe
Author : Oliver Fitzjones
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Stunning photos, with excellent facts and details
This really is a must for anyone interested in surfing. The detail is incredible and very useful, and the pictures are amazing. This book shows why Europe and the British Isles have some of the best surfing spots on the planet.

Title : Inner Skiing
Author : Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Essential reading for skiers at all levels
The inner sports series brings advanced sports psychology techniques, previously only available to elite athletes, to us all.
There are plenty of instructors in the mountains who can guide you with exercises to improve your technique, but this book goes much deeper than that.
By understanding the psychology of sport and how we learn new skills you can greatly increase your development as a skier. Clear explanations, backed by excellent anectdotal examples, help us understand how we can make the best of ourselves and our time on the mountain.
Thanks to this book, within 2 years (ie 2 weeks spread over 2 years) I have gone from an average skier who often wound up flat on his back to a very proficient and confident skier - my technique is now the envy of all my skiing friends.
Indispensable!

Title : Surfing the World (Footprint Travel Guide)
Author : Chris Nelson
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Awesome
A truly inspiring book. Each break is brought to life with the right balance of know-how, stories, history and beautiful photography. This is essential reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in the surf potential of the planet.

Title : The All-mountain Skier: The Way to Expert Skiing
Author : Mark Elling
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : High Praise
The All Mountain Skier by Mark Elling is the best manual I have read. It tackles the problems faces by the second year skier wishing to become advanced. I have been taking lessons and was told to do allsorts of movements that I did not understand. This book puts those movements into perspective. On smooth piste at low speed they were unnecessary, at speed on rough and powder they become fundamental.
I practice on a dry slope. Whilst reading the book I became an advanced skier overnight. All the things had been taught in training now made sense. Because I now understood why, I was able to identify the different elements and embody them in my technique.
There is an effective section on equipment.
I owe a lot to Mr Elling. He has saved me a fortune in tuition. This book is not for the raw beginner but as soon as you know that you want to ski beyond the intermediate level buy the book and grow into it. Thanks Mr Elling, I hope this sells some more for you.

Title : Hermann Maier: The Race of My Life
Author : Hermann Maier
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Who needs footballers when we have sportsmen like Hermanator
An inspiring account of the unbelievable recovery from a horrific accident. This is a thoroughly good read if not a little cheesy in parts (although this may be a result of the translation process).
Other than that, if you are an admirer of the almighty Herminator, then this will not disappoint.

Title : Surf Science: An Introduction to Waves for Surfing
Author : Tony Butt
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : This will totally enlighten your surfing!
Once your hooked on a sport you need something to keep taking you further, this is what you need to take you from going to the beach and going... oh its flat but the bbc said 2foot choppy, too planning your surf trips a week in advance... to the time of the day to go. It will teach you what makes waves, what makes good waves and riding, why certain times of the day are better than others... your mind is the limit and this will take you a long long way.
