Summary : What a kick!

One of the things I love about cross-country skiing is its diversity. Another thing is the easy-going quality -- you just go and enjoy the hell out of it, whether you're skating or track skiing or telemarking or running around the backcountry yodeling. The thing I DON'T like is how many practitioners take it sooo seriously. Jules Older's book is a kick in the pants. He has the right priorities. Whether he's talking about equipment, clothing, technique, skiing with your old dog, even waxing (which attracts the real fanatics!), you feel he's about to giggle. and it's contagious! There's still plenty of useful information; but the context - including photos - makes it fun. If you'd like to learn about a great sport, hear some great stories, and laugh a lot in the process, I'd choose this over any other book! (And yeah, I used to be one of those fanatics; turns out it's more fun to learn and laugh at the same time.)

Summary : this is how it feels....

I bought this book based on other reviews and really enjoyed it as the author does manage to convey much of what if feels and what drives you to surf. It's not outstanding literature but it is a good read and probably one to pass to your girlfriend/boyfriend to give them some understanding of why you do what you do, although be prepared for them to dump you afterwards!

Summary : A fantastic book

This book is well worth owning. It is amusing, self-depreciating, and extremely well written avoiding most of the cliches and painting a beautiful picture of the Californian coast. The best surf autobiography I have read since "Walking on water" by Andy Martin

basically its realistic excersises and stretching aimed at surfing, and take it from this fat, lazy mid 30's chap even if you just take elements it will help you out.

Summary : Top notch - still a reference book for me

I'm a Ski Instructor and can heartily recommend this book.. especially the section on "you can blame your equipment sometimes" ! I used it myself a few years ago when I was preparing for my instructor exams and found it an excellent read. The exercises are useful too and some of them have found their way into a number of my high-end lessons.

It's also good in that it's a modern book - ski technology has changed over the years and therefore so has technique. This book is up to date, as opposed to some (although still excellent in some areas) other books that are now becoming dated.

As others have said, it's not a book for beginners but if you have an idea of proper ski control, body management etc. it can give you a good headstart for a week away and will make an instructors life easier when you go for tune-up lessons !

Having not been skiing for a number of years I wanted to get the latest up-to-date information to ensure I picked the most suitable resort for our needs.
This book is so easy to use. It has a section for each individual resort that tells you, honestly, the plus and minus points, the details that holiday brochures won't mention and things to look out for - often based on reports that readers send in on the resorts they have visited.
There is a quick-view table giving star ratings for various features such as 'queues', 'snow', 'extent'so you can easily compare the scores for different resorts
You can write down a 'wishlist' for your ideal resort and use the 'resort shortlists' to help you spot resorts that will suit you.
This book will come out every year from now on before I even lift a holiday brochure!

An excellent book. As an leisure windsurfer and feeling I need to stretch and get fitter this book gives you the exercise routines. It seems to be aimed at those who can surf every day(I wish) but a watering down of the some exercises for those who do windsurfing once a week is possible. After only a couple of days of the sun-salutations I'm feeling a bit more flexible, but still in theh aching stages. On the whole a great buy.

The Athletic Skier takes a very unusal approach to ski instruction. It begins with the assumption that you cannot ski well if your boots are not fitted so that they are flat on the snow. It is so elementary, but so ignored in the world of ski instruction. It is also very difficult to accomplish, but worth the effort. Once you take the time to follow the authors' advice, your skiing will improve dramatically. Then if you work on carving the turns as they suggest, you'll realize another leap forward, part of which occurs just because you are standing on the skis correctly.
