Summary : I can't agree with all the comments!

It's a good basic book and a useful reference. But it won't make you a good skier and it certainly won't make you "an advanced skier overnight".

If you're anything but a beginner take a look at "The Athletic Skier" by Warren Witherell and see what a really good ski manual is all about.

Summary : An effective and inspiring guide to freeing skiers from fear

I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. I reread Inner Skiing annually as an essential pre-ski exercise, and if I don't read every word I never fail to take a dose of inspiration from the paragraph in the last chapter which begins "Inside us all is a mountain with no top and no bottom. The skiing there is perfect. The snow is made of pure peace and there is not a trace of Self 1 interference.................Skiing this inner mountain has the power to satisfy the human longing to know oneself and the reason for which one was born." Summary : High Praise

The All Mountain Skier by Mark Elling is the best manual I have read. It tackles the problems faces by the second year skier wishing to become advanced. I have been taking lessons and was told to do allsorts of movements that I did not understand. This book puts those movements into perspective. On smooth piste at low speed they were unnecessary, at speed on rough and powder they become fundamental.

I practice on a dry slope. Whilst reading the book I became an advanced skier overnight. All the things had been taught in training now made sense. Because I now understood why, I was able to identify the different elements and embody them in my technique.

There is an effective section on equipment.

I owe a lot to Mr Elling. He has saved me a fortune in tuition. This book is not for the raw beginner but as soon as you know that you want to ski beyond the intermediate level buy the book and grow into it. Thanks Mr Elling, I hope this sells some more for you.

Summary : Read like a sunday paper article

Disapointing. You are better off forking out a bit more money for a more comprehensive guide. OTOH, does a good job of summarizing how different resorts are linked to each other. Maybe a good buy if you are spandex wearing piste cruiser.

Summary : Antidote to the British Winter....

If you're looking for motivation to dig out, wax up and paddle out your surf board after a long cold winter, this is it.

Beautifully written, this thoughful and though provoking book captures the pleasures of surfing, and covers just enough of the history and culture of the sport to whet your appetitie without trying to turn you into a social historian.

The Austrialian author is obviously bent out of shape by Austalia's domestic immigration policy, but even her political hand-wringing is thought provoking, even though it loses a lot of its relevance for UK readers.

I've just read my copy in two days and would happily recommend it to any surfer (or anyone with a love of the sea) looking for a good read....

Summary : A must for a beginning surfer, more of a survival guide.

This is a great book to learn in depth about surfing, I have been surfing since I was 6 and I wish that I had a book to teach me all of the things that I learned the hard way. This book is a survival guide, It teaches you about waves, form and how to identify rip tides and other things that can end your day of surfing and your life. If you are considering learning to to surf, you can't afford not to read this book.

Summary : The new surfers bible!

Wow! This book is an amazing piece of work. It has all the surf breaks, accurate maps that actually get you to the breaks, cool stories and board advice. But it wasn't until I hit the road this Autumn that I realised just how much info is in this book. It has cool surfer friendly places to sleep, great value places to eat and great bars to drink in at every stop along the way. It meant I didn't need to waste money on a travel guide or waste time searching for decent places to stay. It's also a neat size to travel with and has loads of great photos.
I scored some amazing waves that I'd never even heard of before. It has made me realise the true surfing potential of Europe.

Summary : What a kick!

One of the things I love about cross-country skiing is its diversity. Another thing is the easy-going quality -- you just go and enjoy the hell out of it, whether you're skating or track skiing or telemarking or running around the backcountry yodeling. The thing I DON'T like is how many practitioners take it sooo seriously. Jules Older's book is a kick in the pants. He has the right priorities. Whether he's talking about equipment, clothing, technique, skiing with your old dog, even waxing (which attracts the real fanatics!), you feel he's about to giggle. and it's contagious! There's still plenty of useful information; but the context - including photos - makes it fun. If you'd like to learn about a great sport, hear some great stories, and laugh a lot in the process, I'd choose this over any other book! (And yeah, I used to be one of those fanatics; turns out it's more fun to learn and laugh at the same time.)

Following Duane from the fringes to the heart of (Californian) surf-culture feels like a personal experience. He writes poetically but avoids cliche by being self-effacing and objective. 'CI' combines diverse literary sources with the simple but physical sensations of surfing; but these are kept in perspective by Duane's reverence for the nature that envelops him. Beautiful.
