It's a good basic book and a useful reference. But it won't make you a good skier and it certainly won't make you "an advanced skier overnight".

If you're anything but a beginner take a look at "The Athletic Skier" by Warren Witherell and see what a really good ski manual is all about.

Summary : High Praise

The All Mountain Skier by Mark Elling is the best manual I have read. It tackles the problems faces by the second year skier wishing to become advanced. I have been taking lessons and was told to do allsorts of movements that I did not understand. This book puts those movements into perspective. On smooth piste at low speed they were unnecessary, at speed on rough and powder they become fundamental.

I practice on a dry slope. Whilst reading the book I became an advanced skier overnight. All the things had been taught in training now made sense. Because I now understood why, I was able to identify the different elements and embody them in my technique.

There is an effective section on equipment.

I owe a lot to Mr Elling. He has saved me a fortune in tuition. This book is not for the raw beginner but as soon as you know that you want to ski beyond the intermediate level buy the book and grow into it. Thanks Mr Elling, I hope this sells some more for you.

Summary : Brilliant basic beginners book

I got this book a week before my first ever surfing lesson, and it made me feel so much more confident going in the water, answering some of my questions and giving tips just on things like carrying your board, and paddling out, which all seem quite simple, but to a beginner can be a bit overwhelming all put together. It was great to come back to as well, to review what I'd done, and provides some good information on the different types of boards. It also contains some basic information about rips, currents, what forms waves, and what causes them to break, which I also found fascinating. It is very basic, but as a beginner that's all you need, and I'd definitely recommend it to ayone starting out.

Summary : Essential reading for advanced skiers

This is truly an amazing book. The numerous colour photos are inspirational, and the text is very well written. This is one of the few sports books I've ever read that will genuinly make you better just by reading it.

Negatives? I'm not sure I agree with all his boot fitting advice, but he's totally right on canting: until you've experimented with your canting angles your skis aren't set up right. Second, some people will feel initially (as I did) that this book is overly focussed on carving, and as well from a racing and on-piste perspective. But I've learnt (and you should too) that you need to put at least a little carve into every turn, and until then you're not skiing pistes, moguls or off-piste properly. (OK, if you always ski on powder you don't need to learn carving). As he points out, carving is the diffence between playing soccer on wet grass in running shoes or football boots.

In summary: buy this book. You'll learn a huge amount about skiing and you can show your non-skiing friends the lovely photos.

This should have been a fascinating read, after all, Kelly Slater has dominated the surfing scene like no one else before and is still considered by many as one of the most powerful surfers around today. However, what we actually get is none of the passion of Kelly's surfing and weak writing lets down what could have been a fascinating story. It all too often has the feel of a school project and even the climax of a world championship fought out in the finals of the Pipemasters contest in Hawaii fails to conjure up the tension it should.

All surfers should find this an interesting enough read, but Kelly should have employed the services of a biographer to tell his story. Not in the same league as Tony Hawk's autobiography.

It has nothing to do with ability and everything to do with how surfing makes you feel and understand your place in the world. It has nothing to do with competing with others and everything to do with competing with yourself. This book has soul and it has it because its straightforward honesty allows you to escape into another dimension. It won't tell you how to perform a cutback or a floater but it will give you an insight into why, when you attempt a cutback or a floater you come closer to understanding yourself than ever before. Buy this book if you like surfing, the ocean, nature or you just love well written voyages of discovery.

The book takes the beginner through the fundamentals in good detail with clear photographs and illustrations. Since the author is British it is geared to surfers in the UK. However it has a very sensible approach to learning the fundamentals of surfing that anyone can benefit from. It also covers all the ancillary issues such as equipment selection, safety and surfing weather in practical detail. Above all it is easy and fun to read. With more advanced techniques also included it provides support even to intermediate or advanced surfers wanting another angle on surfing at their level. I have surfed in the UK, in Japan, Indonesia and Australia and I find myself using this book as a reference time and again to help refresh and move my surfing to the next level. Read, surf and enjoy.

Sit down and read it on a fine day overlooking the sea and the surf and you'll go back in the water understanding so much more - It really is that good, even for such a small volume. After reading three other books on how to learn, this is the one that is making sense of all the others. That, and Wingnut's Art of Longboarding DVD if you can find it.

The section on reading the water surface to identify rip currents I haven't seen described anywhere else... plenty of books explain the dangers of rips, but not how to find spot them on the water surface

By all means buy some other step-by-step photo books, but get this one too

This book is well worth owning. It is amusing, self-depreciating, and extremely well written avoiding most of the cliches and painting a beautiful picture of the Californian coast. The best surf autobiography I have read since "Walking on water" by Andy Martin

An excellent book. As an leisure windsurfer and feeling I need to stretch and get fitter this book gives you the exercise routines. It seems to be aimed at those who can surf every day(I wish) but a watering down of the some exercises for those who do windsurfing once a week is possible. After only a couple of days of the sun-salutations I'm feeling a bit more flexible, but still in theh aching stages. On the whole a great buy.
