Title : Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt: Guide for Skiers and Mountain Walkers
Author : Peter Cliff
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : You could not do The Haute Route without this book!
The Haute Route by Peter Cliff provides an extremely accurate description of an Alpine expedition. The Classic Route included diagrams, photos, and narratives and offered sufficient information for us, as an unguided group of five, to navigate our way successfully from Chamonix to Zermatt in the anticipated eight days (July 17-July 24, 2001). Poor weather hampered our start, but with the use of the spot-heights provided in the guide, a map and compass, and limited visibility, we were able to proceed. The sections of the route which Peter Cliff described as challenging proved to be so. Long sections were indeed very long. The scenery was equally as breath-taking as he described. His time estimates were very close that of our group (give or take a little), depending upon snow and weather conditions. The Classic Route is essentially a long walk requiring sustained effort, both mental as well as physical, and Peter Cliff's guide proved to be a reliable and thorough source of information to assist in route-finding and where variations/alternatives may be found if required. We carried the guide through the Alps and referred to it frequently. This guide can be highly recommended for anyone seriously interested in negotiating their way through the highest mountains of the Alps. As far as personal recommendations to readers of this book are concerned, there are only a few: (1) it is not necessary to purchase all the maps listed in the guide - select either the 1:25,000 or the 1:50,000, not both. (2) purchase a reliable altimeter - use it for frequent spot-height checks. (3) do not expect to see lots of other walkers on The Haute Route - route-finding is a challenge and a guide such as this is invaluable. (4) add a pair of ear-plugs to your equipment list - you will need them at the more popular/noisy huts. (5) the La Breya chairlift is spectacularly high and an extremely enjoyable part of the journey - during the period we were there, it ran constantly and was moderately priced at 9 Swiss Francs. Finally, we heard it rumoured that Peter Cliff was at the Albert Premier Hut on July 17, and that we had just missed him. It would have been a pleasure to meet him in person and thank him for writing such an entertaining, enjoyable and informative book.

Title : Surfing: A Beginner's Manual
Author : Wayne Alderson
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A practical and clear introduction to the sport.
Wayne Alderson's book covers all the important issues necessary to give anyone who wants to start surfing a fun, safe and informed introduction to this sport. The book takes the beginner through the fundamentals in good detail with clear photographs and illustrations. Since the author is British it is geared to surfers in the UK. However it has a very sensible approach to learning the fundamentals of surfing that anyone can benefit from. It also covers all the ancillary issues such as equipment selection, safety and surfing weather in practical detail. Above all it is easy and fun to read. With more advanced techniques also included it provides support even to intermediate or advanced surfers wanting another angle on surfing at their level. I have surfed in the UK, in Japan, Indonesia and Australia and I find myself using this book as a reference time and again to help refresh and move my surfing to the next level. Read, surf and enjoy.

Title : Complete Snowboarder
Author : Jeff Bennett
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Great Learn-How-to-Board Book!
Great introduction to snowboarding. Provides all the language and techniques, from beginner to expert. It works best to reread it again after a few times out as you will pick up on many of the tips and techniques once you learn how the basic moves feel. I kept my copy in the car and reread some sections over lunch on my first day. Especially important to read the section on getting off of the chair lift. This has saved me from many falls, while I have watched others flounder and get injured for not following the advice.
Still need to take a lesson first time out, but it will all make sense alot sooner.

Title : Allen and Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips (Falcon Guide)
Author : Allen O'Bannon
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An excellent guide to improving your telemark technique
I've been a telemark skier for over 15 years. Even so, this book has been very helpful in helping me to understand and improve my technique. The book dissects the turn into an incremental learning experience - really giving a skier something to focus on in the quest for tele-turning joy. Understanding that each skier is an individual, the authors don't try to force-fit the reader into a particular mold, instead allowing the skier to find the tips that will most help their skiing. The humorous illustrations and writing make for a refreshingly friendly and approachable book - an improvement upon the usual writing on the subject. The book has been helpful for me, and I don't doubt that tele-skiers of all skill levels will find it just as useful.

Title : The World Stormrider Guide (Stormrider Guides)
Author : Antony Colas
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Nice on the book shelf but not a bible
Nicely presented with statistics and the such like , but a 'world summary' more than a world guide.Any core surfer is going to know about most of the places presented anyway. Also some strange choices - Israel ??! and Pernambuco ?? I lived in Brazil for six years and can definetly state that Pernambuco has the WORST surf in Brazil.Keeps you busy in the down time and the photos and oceanography info are excellent .

Title : Where to Ski Snowboard 2007 (The 1000 Best Winter Sports Resorts in the World)
Author : Chris Gill
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Don't know where to go? - essential reading
Having not been skiing for a number of years I wanted to get the latest up-to-date information to ensure I picked the most suitable resort for our needs.
This book is so easy to use. It has a section for each individual resort that tells you, honestly, the plus and minus points, the details that holiday brochures won't mention and things to look out for - often based on reports that readers send in on the resorts they have visited.
There is a quick-view table giving star ratings for various features such as 'queues', 'snow', 'extent'so you can easily compare the scores for different resorts
You can write down a 'wishlist' for your ideal resort and use the 'resort shortlists' to help you spot resorts that will suit you.
This book will come out every year from now on before I even lift a holiday brochure!

Title : The Stormrider Guide: Europe - Complete Colour Atlas and Guide to All the Surfing Locations in Europe
Author : Oliver Fitzjones
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Indispensable
You must buy this book if you're planning on going further afield than your regular break. I spent 8 months in France and found some great spots on the back of this book. And when you're stuck at home, you'll find yourself drooling over the pictures and mentally planning your way around europe!

Title : Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt: Guide for Skiers and Mountain Walkers
Author : Peter Cliff
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : The Haute-Route on skis...
Based on the route-descriptions, the previous reviewer appears to refer only to the summer walker's section of this book (you certainly won't be taking the avalanche-prone summer route from the La Breya lift in the course of a ski-mountaineering Haute-Route).
However, the positive assessment extends to the ski section, as well. This is a wonderful guide to one of the great alpine ski tours, including details critical to route-finding over complex, glaciated terrain in possibly poor visibility.
Recognizing that choice of ski-mountaineering routes is extremely conditions skills dependent, the book includes information on the true classic route--including the brilliant but technical Plateau du Couloir the tiresome, plodding Otemma glacier--as well as several typical /or desirable variations like Verbier Grand Lui.
Cliff's guide contains some route photos stylized maps that are useful for generalized visualization of route segments. I would have preferred that he include a map of the complete route, but it isn't really necessary because you absolutely will need to purchase at least some of the recommended topo maps (pick the 1:50,000 ski topos; they include major ski route lines are frequently updated by the efficient Swiss government. The smaller-scale 1:25,000 maps are beautiful, but do not show routes; also, you would have to purchase so many of them that they are not practical).
The author includes interesting asides about the history of the route adjacent areas. The accomplishments of early Haute Route ski-pioneers are truly astounding, given the rudimentary nature of their gear clothing.
The book's information regarding hut contacts is somewhat limited (although newer editions may address this); many of the huts recently acquired web sites e-mail addresses that greatly simplify reservations for language-challenged Americans. On this point, Cliff--with classic British reserve--perhaps under-emphasizes the utility of rudimentary French /or German skills in accomplishing the Haute Route; it is difficult to take advantage of the hut-keeper's local knowledge with only English in your quiver.
He also doesn't address telemark equipment in much depth. For better or worse, to Americans ski touring usually means telemarking, so talk to a knowledgeable guide before showing up on pins. You need to make some adjustments, most notably: jury-rigging a pair of harscheisen.
The book does not include any coverage beyond the Haute Route, so if you intend to do day tours in Chamonix to warm up or in Zermatt before continuing on to Saas Fee, then look elsewhere: "Mont Blanc Ski Tours" is excellent.
"High level route, Chamonix, Zermatt, Saas: Ski mountaineering in the Mont Blanc range and Pennine Alps" by Eric Roberts is another good guide to the Haute Route if you can find it.

Title : Surfing Europe (Footprint Surfing Guide)
Author : Chris Nelson
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : awesome
I've just bought this book and I have to say it's the best surf guide out there. Its got more spots than my Stormrider but it also has info on places to stay, surf shops, tips from top surfers, stuff to actually read - I don't know why no one's done this before. I'm off to France next week and this will definately be on my dashboard. Nice one.

Title : Surfing Europe (Footprint Surfing Guide)
Author : Chris Nelson
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Footprint Surfing Europe
I've been waiting for a book like this to come along for years and I'm not disappointed by this one. On the contrary, it's got all the best surf spots throughout Europe and Morocco and would be a valuable companion on any trip. It also includes listings for where to stay and eat and even what to do when there's no surf. Highly recommended.

Title : Surfing the World (Footprint Travel Guide)
Author : Chris Nelson
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Awesome
A truly inspiring book. Each break is brought to life with the right balance of know-how, stories, history and beautiful photography. This is essential reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in the surf potential of the planet.

Title : Allen and Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips (Falcon Guide)
Author : Allen O'Bannon
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Along side Parker's book telemark heaven is just a turn away
Relevent tips and humourous illustrations make this one of the most approachable books, in not just telemark, but all spheres of skiing. All you now need are snowy mountains.

Title : Athletic Skier
Author : Warren Witherall
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Essential reading for advanced skiers
This is truly an amazing book. The numerous colour photos are inspirational, and the text is very well written. This is one of the few sports books I've ever read that will genuinly make you better just by reading it.
Negatives? I'm not sure I agree with all his boot fitting advice, but he's totally right on canting: until you've experimented with your canting angles your skis aren't set up right. Second, some people will feel initially (as I did) that this book is overly focussed on carving, and as well from a racing and on-piste perspective. But I've learnt (and you should too) that you need to put at least a little carve into every turn, and until then you're not skiing pistes, moguls or off-piste properly. (OK, if you always ski on powder you don't need to learn carving). As he points out, carving is the diffence between playing soccer on wet grass in running shoes or football boots.
In summary: buy this book. You'll learn a huge amount about skiing and you can show your non-skiing friends the lovely photos.

Title : Learn to Surf
Author : James MacLaren
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : A good book for surfers and beginners
Despite of language difficulties, this book give me some tips about surfing sport. I'm a surfer for only two years and I feel that my expertise have been improved more rapidly since I wrote the book. I'm graduated in Oceanography and think that the author have a correct approach about technical aspects of coastal dynamics and safe behavior on beach and sea waters, probably acquired on a wide experience (surfing a lot). Good choice for all water fans.
