Title : Allen and Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips (Falcon Guide) Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Drop the knee, not the bomb...
I'm the illustrator of this groovy book. If the following sounds like shameless self promotion...it is. 109 amazing tele-tips, what more could you ask for? I personally subjected my ski partners to my less than subtal research technique, I bugged 'em by asking every concievable question and making 'em try (almost) every tip in the book. The winter of 97/98 involved getting up in the morning and going backcountry skiing, then coming home and drawing bizzare cartoons of what subtal telemark insights I uncovered durring the day. The results are in this little book. People actually stop me on the street and thank me for improving their tele-skiing! If you telemark (beginner or expert, doesn't matter) you need this book; for example there is a funny cartoon of a guy puting a penny in his butt...really! Strange but true, this is a valuable tool to perfect this beautiful style of skiing. 'nuff said...Mike Clelland!
Title : Athletic Skier Author : Warren Witherall Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : THE definitive guide
If you buy only one book on skiing, this should be it. It is a joy to read, and re-read. Keep it on the coffee table at your ski condo and read any random chapter. You'll learn something.
Warren is the father of carving long before it became a fad. It is "how the racers ski" (which is also the name of his first book from the early 70's that is a classic).
The content if outstanding and the writing and presentation is equally as nice. Glossy pages, excellent photography.
I've given this book to more hard core skiers than I'd like to say.
The section on balance and alignment alone are worth the money. Buy it!
Title : The World Stormrider Guide (Stormrider Guides) Author : Antony Colas Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Excellent reference for surfers in search for the best waves

Title : The Stormrider Guide: Europe - Complete Colour Atlas and Guide to All the Surfing Locations in Europe Author : Oliver Fitzjones Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Indispensable
You must buy this book if you're planning on going further afield than your regular break. I spent 8 months in France and found some great spots on the back of this book. And when you're stuck at home, you'll find yourself drooling over the pictures and mentally planning your way around europe!
Title : Learn to Surf Author : James MacLaren Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Before entering the water, read it, often
Sit down and read it on a fine day overlooking the sea and the surf and you'll go back in the water understanding so much more - It really is that good, even for such a small volume. After reading three other books on how to learn, this is the one that is making sense of all the others. That, and Wingnut's Art of Longboarding DVD if you can find it.
The section on reading the water surface to identify rip currents I haven't seen described anywhere else... plenty of books explain the dangers of rips, but not how to find spot them on the water surface
By all means buy some other step-by-step photo books, but get this one too
Title : Scooby Doo and the Snow Monster (Scooby-Doo! Mysteries (Paperback)) Author : James Gelsey Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Excellent Movie!
I love this Scooby Doo movie! It's one of the best that I have ever seen. I love it because it's in a setting of snow and I love how Scooby and the gang solve the mystery! I definetly recommend!
Title : Learn to Surf Author : James MacLaren Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : A must for a beginning surfer, more of a survival guide.
This is a great book to learn in depth about surfing, I have been surfing since I was 6 and I wish that I had a book to teach me all of the things that I learned the hard way. This book is a survival guide, It teaches you about waves, form and how to identify rip tides and other things that can end your day of surfing and your life. If you are considering learning to to surf, you can't afford not to read this book.
Title : The Stormrider Guide: Europe - Complete Colour Atlas and Guide to All the Surfing Locations in Europe Author : Oliver Fitzjones Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Stunning photos, with excellent facts and details
This really is a must for anyone interested in surfing. The detail is incredible and very useful, and the pictures are amazing. This book shows why Europe and the British Isles have some of the best surfing spots on the planet.
Title : The World Stormrider Guide: Vol 2 (Stormrider Guides) Author : Antony Colas Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Very good text but very average photography
The text is great and general info is spot on but to be honest i was disappointed with the book in general because of the pictures. There wasnt much variation in the size and positioning of the pictures(maybe im just used to the superb photography is CARVE magazine) which gave the book a monotonous tone and didnt give you much wow factor.
The text is still a great guide and has given me some great plans just isnt presented as well as it could me, but definately still worth your hard earned cash! :)
Title : Surfing: A Beginner's Manual Author : Wayne Alderson Rating : 4 Stars out of 5. Summary : Brilliant basic beginners book
I got this book a week before my first ever surfing lesson, and it made me feel so much more confident going in the water, answering some of my questions and giving tips just on things like carrying your board, and paddling out, which all seem quite simple, but to a beginner can be a bit overwhelming all put together. It was great to come back to as well, to review what I'd done, and provides some good information on the different types of boards. It also contains some basic information about rips, currents, what forms waves, and what causes them to break, which I also found fascinating. It is very basic, but as a beginner that's all you need, and I'd definitely recommend it to ayone starting out.
Title : Allen and Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips (Falcon Guide) Author : Allen O'Bannon Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : Along side Parker's book telemark heaven is just a turn away
Relevent tips and humourous illustrations make this one of the most approachable books, in not just telemark, but all spheres of skiing. All you now need are snowy mountains.
Title : Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt: Guide for Skiers and Mountain Walkers Author : Peter Cliff Rating : 5 Stars out of 5. Summary : You could not do The Haute Route without this book!
The Haute Route by Peter Cliff provides an extremely accurate description of an Alpine expedition. The Classic Route included diagrams, photos, and narratives and offered sufficient information for us, as an unguided group of five, to navigate our way successfully from Chamonix to Zermatt in the anticipated eight days (July 17-July 24, 2001). Poor weather hampered our start, but with the use of the spot-heights provided in the guide, a map and compass, and limited visibility, we were able to proceed. The sections of the route which Peter Cliff described as challenging proved to be so. Long sections were indeed very long. The scenery was equally as breath-taking as he described. His time estimates were very close that of our group (give or take a little), depending upon snow and weather conditions. The Classic Route is essentially a long walk requiring sustained effort, both mental as well as physical, and Peter Cliff's guide proved to be a reliable and thorough source of information to assist in route-finding and where variations/alternatives may be found if required. We carried the guide through the Alps and referred to it frequently. This guide can be highly recommended for anyone seriously interested in negotiating their way through the highest mountains of the Alps. As far as personal recommendations to readers of this book are concerned, there are only a few: (1) it is not necessary to purchase all the maps listed in the guide - select either the 1:25,000 or the 1:50,000, not both. (2) purchase a reliable altimeter - use it for frequent spot-height checks. (3) do not expect to see lots of other walkers on The Haute Route - route-finding is a challenge and a guide such as this is invaluable. (4) add a pair of ear-plugs to your equipment list - you will need them at the more popular/noisy huts. (5) the La Breya chairlift is spectacularly high and an extremely enjoyable part of the journey - during the period we were there, it ran constantly and was moderately priced at 9 Swiss Francs. Finally, we heard it rumoured that Peter Cliff was at the Albert Premier Hut on July 17, and that we had just missed him. It would have been a pleasure to meet him in person and thank him for writing such an entertaining, enjoyable and informative book.
