Title : Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt: Guide for Skiers and Mountain Walkers
Author : Peter Cliff
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : You could not do The Haute Route without this book!
The Haute Route by Peter Cliff provides an extremely accurate description of an Alpine expedition. The Classic Route included diagrams, photos, and narratives and offered sufficient information for us, as an unguided group of five, to navigate our way successfully from Chamonix to Zermatt in the anticipated eight days (July 17-July 24, 2001). Poor weather hampered our start, but with the use of the spot-heights provided in the guide, a map and compass, and limited visibility, we were able to proceed. The sections of the route which Peter Cliff described as challenging proved to be so. Long sections were indeed very long. The scenery was equally as breath-taking as he described. His time estimates were very close that of our group (give or take a little), depending upon snow and weather conditions. The Classic Route is essentially a long walk requiring sustained effort, both mental as well as physical, and Peter Cliff's guide proved to be a reliable and thorough source of information to assist in route-finding and where variations/alternatives may be found if required. We carried the guide through the Alps and referred to it frequently. This guide can be highly recommended for anyone seriously interested in negotiating their way through the highest mountains of the Alps. As far as personal recommendations to readers of this book are concerned, there are only a few: (1) it is not necessary to purchase all the maps listed in the guide - select either the 1:25,000 or the 1:50,000, not both. (2) purchase a reliable altimeter - use it for frequent spot-height checks. (3) do not expect to see lots of other walkers on The Haute Route - route-finding is a challenge and a guide such as this is invaluable. (4) add a pair of ear-plugs to your equipment list - you will need them at the more popular/noisy huts. (5) the La Breya chairlift is spectacularly high and an extremely enjoyable part of the journey - during the period we were there, it ran constantly and was moderately priced at 9 Swiss Francs. Finally, we heard it rumoured that Peter Cliff was at the Albert Premier Hut on July 17, and that we had just missed him. It would have been a pleasure to meet him in person and thank him for writing such an entertaining, enjoyable and informative book.

Title : The World Stormrider Guide (Stormrider Guides)
Author : Antony Colas
Rating : 4 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Nice on the book shelf but not a bible
Nicely presented with statistics and the such like , but a 'world summary' more than a world guide.Any core surfer is going to know about most of the places presented anyway. Also some strange choices - Israel ??! and Pernambuco ?? I lived in Brazil for six years and can definetly state that Pernambuco has the WORST surf in Brazil.Keeps you busy in the down time and the photos and oceanography info are excellent .

Title : Inner Skiing
Author : Gallwey
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An effective and inspiring guide to freeing skiers from fear
I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Gallwey and his co-author Bob Kriegel, a more experienced skier than he and a psychologist, equip their readers with simple but highly effective keys to Self 2, enabling us increasingly to find in skiing the exhilaration of the breakthrough run, and unlocking the confidence without which the sport can be an exercise in anxiety. Most of us in the UK only get to ski once a year. I reread Inner Skiing annually as an essential pre-ski exercise, and if I don't read every word I never fail to take a dose of inspiration from the paragraph in the last chapter which begins "Inside us all is a mountain with no top and no bottom. The skiing there is perfect. The snow is made of pure peace and there is not a trace of Self 1 interference.................Skiing this inner mountain has the power to satisfy the human longing to know oneself and the reason for which one was born." You may guess from this that Timothy Gallwey's is the inner game of life, with applications far beyond the realms of sport, as his other writing attests. Dr. Basil Lee, London, England.

Title : Surf Flex: Flexibility, Yoga and Conditioning Exercises for Surfers (Sport Flex Series)
Author : Paul Frediani
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : This book LITERALLY saved my life!
First of all, I'll review the book, then I'll tell you how it saved my life...As a 31 year old surfer, I knew that I wasn't getting any younger, I also wasn't getting any better at surfing. I needed a lift, one that could help me on days I couldn't get to, or it wasn't worth going in the water. This is it. Paul Frediani has written quite possibly the most important single book for surfers, ever published. The book is a comprehensive training guide on flexibility, strength, suppleness and balance, written exclusively with surfers in mind. With contributions from top surfers, and watersports experts, it is also full of inspiring titbits. The book is broken into four main training disciplines, Flex time, the Surf Flex workout, Cardio Conditioning and The Wahine (woman) workout. The Flex time section is a basic yoga guide and guide to stretching and flexibility exercises. The exercises are accompanied by clear photos, and are a good starting point. (I would heartily recommend "Yoga - Learn Yoga - Beginners Class 1" video, available from amazon as an excellent beginning companion.)Cardio conditioning is a section of beach, pool and dry land workouts to get your heart pumping and your body working. I heartily agree with Frediani that all surfers need to be good watermen and need to swim at least a mile. This will help you get there. The Wahine workout, (wahine is Hawaiian for woman) is specifically designed to help women build their upper body strength and to avoid knee injuries specific to women. Highly commendable, and yes, some of the exercises are good for blokes too.The piece de resistance is the superb Surf Flex section. This is a section designed exclusively to meet the needs of surfer. You will need a Swiss ball to make the most of this section, (imagine a space hopper with no ears.) You can get them from any good sports shop, or Argos, for about £15. Money well spent! You carry out different moves, whilst balanced on the ball, such as sit-ups, knee tucks, and even practice balancing on the ball, sitting, kneeling and then standing. This all works on the core muscles and impoves your neuromuscular system, (your balance in other words.) It is superb. This will improve your surfing, no question, but it may be more important than that...Feb 2003 I was surfing with friends in North Devon, and after a good days surfing, we were coming to the end of our second session. It was a pretty big day, easily overhead, and with strong offshores. Tired but happy I decided to get out back for one last blast when I was caught in a rip and dragged into the imact zone. Try as I might I couldn't escape. To make matters worse my leash ripped off and I was left stranded with 6 footers dumping on my head and no board. I am convinced that it is only the fact that I had been following this training regime that I am alive to talk about it. The strength, determination, and cardiovascular power I needed that day came as a result of this book. The doctors actually said that if it were not for the fact that I was extremely fit I WOULD have died. Now that is an endorsement!!

Title : Where to Ski Snowboard 2007 (The 1000 Best Winter Sports Resorts in the World)
Author : Chris Gill
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Don't know where to go? - essential reading
Having not been skiing for a number of years I wanted to get the latest up-to-date information to ensure I picked the most suitable resort for our needs.
This book is so easy to use. It has a section for each individual resort that tells you, honestly, the plus and minus points, the details that holiday brochures won't mention and things to look out for - often based on reports that readers send in on the resorts they have visited.
There is a quick-view table giving star ratings for various features such as 'queues', 'snow', 'extent'so you can easily compare the scores for different resorts
You can write down a 'wishlist' for your ideal resort and use the 'resort shortlists' to help you spot resorts that will suit you.
This book will come out every year from now on before I even lift a holiday brochure!

Title : Allen and Mike's Really Cool Telemark Tips (Falcon Guide)
Author : Allen O'Bannon
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : An excellent guide to improving your telemark technique
I've been a telemark skier for over 15 years. Even so, this book has been very helpful in helping me to understand and improve my technique. The book dissects the turn into an incremental learning experience - really giving a skier something to focus on in the quest for tele-turning joy. Understanding that each skier is an individual, the authors don't try to force-fit the reader into a particular mold, instead allowing the skier to find the tips that will most help their skiing. The humorous illustrations and writing make for a refreshingly friendly and approachable book - an improvement upon the usual writing on the subject. The book has been helpful for me, and I don't doubt that tele-skiers of all skill levels will find it just as useful.

Title : Inner Skiing
Author : Gallwey
Rating : 2 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Another thing to get wrong
This book will add a new dimension to your skiing mistakes. Not only can you ski with your feet too close together, hands in the wrong place, bad posture and all those other things ski books go on about, but you can also think in the wrong way. Excellent. Another thing to think about.

Title : Surf Science: An Introduction to Waves for Surfing
Author : Tony Butt
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Whoa!
This book i thought was going to be full of incoherent mumblings about fathoms and linear models but instead of a physics lessons i got very in depth, easy to comprehend information about waves. this helped me, as a surfer, understand the waves and which in turn brought my surfing to a whole new level. I fully recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in the sea, whether you are a surfer of just a gazing out to sea kind of person!

Title : Athletic Skier
Author : Warren Witherall
Rating : 5 Stars out of 5.
Summary : Essential reading for advanced skiers
This is truly an amazing book. The numerous colour photos are inspirational, and the text is very well written. This is one of the few sports books I've ever read that will genuinly make you better just by reading it.

Negatives? I'm not sure I agree with all his boot fitting advice, but he's totally right on canting: until you've experimented with your canting angles your skis aren't set up right. Second, some people will feel initially (as I did) that this book is overly focussed on carving, and as well from a racing and on-piste perspective. But I've learnt (and you should too) that you need to put at least a little carve into every turn, and until then you're not skiing pistes, moguls or off-piste properly. (OK, if you always ski on powder you don't need to learn carving). As he points out, carving is the diffence between playing soccer on wet grass in running shoes or football boots.

In summary: buy this book. You'll learn a huge amount about skiing and you can show your non-skiing friends the lovely photos.
