If you're looking for motivation to dig out, wax up and paddle out your surf board after a long cold winter, this is it.

Beautifully written, this thoughful and though provoking book captures the pleasures of surfing, and covers just enough of the history and culture of the sport to whet your appetitie without trying to turn you into a social historian.

The Austrialian author is obviously bent out of shape by Austalia's domestic immigration policy, but even her political hand-wringing is thought provoking, even though it loses a lot of its relevance for UK readers.

I've just read my copy in two days and would happily recommend it to any surfer (or anyone with a love of the sea) looking for a good read....

I have been reading this book for about twenty years(first publication was November 1977); it was the first of two Inner Game books which, although differing in details, both transformed my attitude to and my performance in the sports I love. I was fortunate to have been given it by a patient who was an Inner Game instructor (or rather, facilitator). If Inner Skiing has only now (1997) become widely available, thanks to the Internet, a generation of British skiers has lost out; for years it has been available only in the USA and to members of Inner Game workshops. With examples from life and from Inner Skiing workshops which are encouraging, inspiring, and often emotionally touching, the book helps skiers of all standards to confront their fears and to tap into the mind's and the body's unconscious store of knowledge and skills; the fears of "flying", falling, speed, injury, failure, and the fear of looking stupid; the knowledge locked into Gallwey's Self 2, a Self which, he teaches us, is ours too. Where his Self 1 is trying, tense, unsure, scared and controlling, Self 2 is free, relaxed, effortless, powerful, and instinctive. Summary : The best ski instruction I've had in 35 years of skiing!

The Athletic Skier takes a very unusal approach to ski instruction. It begins with the assumption that you cannot ski well if your boots are not fitted so that they are flat on the snow. It is so elementary, but so ignored in the world of ski instruction. It is also very difficult to accomplish, but worth the effort. Once you take the time to follow the authors' advice, your skiing will improve dramatically. Then if you work on carving the turns as they suggest, you'll realize another leap forward, part of which occurs just because you are standing on the skis correctly.

I'm the illustrator of this groovy book. If the following sounds like shameless self promotion...it is. 109 amazing tele-tips, what more could you ask for? I personally subjected my ski partners to my less than subtal research technique, I bugged 'em by asking every concievable question and making 'em try (almost) every tip in the book. The winter of 97/98 involved getting up in the morning and going backcountry skiing, then coming home and drawing bizzare cartoons of what subtal telemark insights I uncovered durring the day. The results are in this little book. People actually stop me on the street and thank me for improving their tele-skiing! If you telemark (beginner or expert, doesn't matter) you need this book; for example there is a funny cartoon of a guy puting a penny in his butt...really! Strange but true, this is a valuable tool to perfect this beautiful style of skiing. 'nuff said...Mike Clelland!

Summary : Great Learn-How-to-Board Book!

Great introduction to snowboarding. Provides all the language and techniques, from beginner to expert. It works best to reread it again after a few times out as you will pick up on many of the tips and techniques once you learn how the basic moves feel. I kept my copy in the car and reread some sections over lunch on my first day. Especially important to read the section on getting off of the chair lift. This has saved me from many falls, while I have watched others flounder and get injured for not following the advice. Still need to take a lesson first time out, but it will all make sense alot sooner.

This is a very brief but useful book that targets ski specific stretches, warm-ups and warm downs for ski seasn, as well as off-season strengthening / fitness exercises.

Covers all you need to know about the basics of snowboarding. From history too basic technique and on to advanced technique. The basics are great in this book and are written in a good clear style. However the advanced techniques could do with some more explanation. Also some more colourful pics would have been nice, but the illustrations are clear and useful. If you have not been before I would defiantly recommend reading this book before hand.
